How Genie works

Collect gifts all year; when the occasion comes, build a wishlist from them and invite your friends.

Collect gifts from anywhere

Spotted a gift in a store, a social feed or a chat? Share the link with Genie — the gift is saved in two taps, with a cover and a note. You can also add one by hand when there is no link.

Saving gifts from other apps works on iPhone.

Recipients and occasions

Every gift has a recipient and an occasion: mom’s birthday, New Year, a housewarming. Gifts for yourself are gifts too and live in the same place. When the occasion comes you don’t have to remember what you saw: everything is already sorted by person and occasion.

Reminders

Genie reminds you ahead of time — before the birthday or the date of the occasion, not the night before. The reminder names the person and how many gifts you have already saved for them; tap it to open those gifts.

Wishlist and invitations

When the occasion comes, pick from what you saved and build a wishlist. Share a link to the whole wishlist or to a single gift. You decide whom to invite and how: by link, by request with your approval, or by name; you can close access at any time. Friends open the wishlist in a browser, no app required.

Coming later:

  • SoonChip in: several people, one gift.
  • SoonAsk about size, colour and model. For now you can write them in the gift’s note.
  • SoonAsk the wishlist’s author to add more gifts.
  • SoonSuggest a gift of your own for someone else’s wishlist.

Surprise and who sees what

Friends mark which gift they will give — other guests see “taken”, and names can be hidden, so nobody gives the same thing twice. The person a gift is for doesn’t see these marks.

As the wishlist’s author you see everything that happens in it by default. To keep the surprise for yourself too, turn on “Hide reservations from me”.

To be honest: Genie can’t stop an author from opening their own link as a guest, so the surprise rests on trust.

Genie vs. an ordinary wishlist

  • Ordinary wishlist: A wishlist made before a birthday, then forgottenGenie: Collect gifts all year round
  • Ordinary wishlist: Locked to one storeGenie: Gifts from any store, social feed or link
  • Ordinary wishlist: Bookmarks with no contextGenie: Every gift has a recipient and an occasion; the app reminds you before the date
  • Ordinary wishlist: Three to five places for gifts for you, gifts for others and datesGenie: Everything in one place

Questions? Answers.

Do my friends need the app?

No. A wishlist opens from a link in a browser. The app is for you — to collect gifts and build wishlists.

Which devices does Genie work on?

The app is for iPhone, coming soon to the App Store. A wishlist link opens in any browser.

Can I save gifts for myself?

Yes. Gifts for you and gifts for others live in one place, each with its own recipient and occasion.

Can I share one gift instead of the whole wishlist?

Yes. A gift has its own link, and so does a wishlist.

Can several people chip in on a gift?

Soon. For now, one person takes one gift.

What about ads and data?

Genie has no ads. You can delete your account and data on the Account page.
